Name: Splash Mountain
Type: Log-Flume ride
Location: Magic Kingdom, in Frontierland
The Gist: This water ride is pretty chill and slow moving as you wind up the mountain, going through scenes from the film "Song of the South", until that 52 1/2 foot drop at the end.
A Must-Do For: Anyone who is for some reason a fan of "Song of the South" (that is, the most infamous Disney movie nobody has ever seen), anyone who hasn't heard "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" enough times that day, and naturally, thrill seekers, as this is one of your few options in this park.
Avoid if: You don't think you'd like a 52-and-a-half foot drop; you are opposed to possibly getting wet.
Fear Factor: 4.5/10. Sure, that plunge at the end is thrilling, but the ride actually lasts a decent amount of time, and there is absolutely nothing scary about this ride for 95% of its duration. Unless you are afraid of cheesy singing animal robots. Or antiquated southern stereotypes.
Lines & Other Tips: This is a decently popular ride (especially on hot days), so expect to have to wait a while or get a Fastpass. However, if you don't mind waiting until the evening to ride, go after dark, preferably after the fireworks. It has been my experience over and over that Frontierland tends to greatly empty out during this time. No idea why, but it always seems to happen.
The Water: If you absolutely do not want to get wet, then don't ride on this. The amount of wetness you will experience can vary greatly, to getting lightly splashed to soaked. It mostly depends on where you sit (on the WDW website, it says that the front row and the right side of the boat get the most water) and whether or not the water cannon effect goes off as you happen to be passing by. Either way, you won't always have much control. Bringing a rain poncho would be a good idea.
I've only done this ride a few times, honestly. I like it, but its not something I must do everytime I go. For me, though, seeing those silly singing animatronics is far more entertaining than the drop itself. But, this is a Magic Kingdom classic that can never be replaced.
xoxo, Lily.
