Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: Ride Review

Name: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Type: Ride, Roller Coaster
Location: Magic Kingdom, in Frontierland
The Gist: Board a runaway mine train and travel up hills, through caves and around tight curves in a desert setting.
A Must-Do For:  People who like rollercoasters, as this is one of only 2 options at the Magic Kingdom; kids looking to try out their first somewhat-thrilling ride.
Avoid If: You really hate roller coasters, even small ones, or are very afraid of heights.
Fear Factor: I'd give it a 5.5/10. The movement of the ride is very similar to that of Space Mountain, but since Big Thunder is not in the dark, it seems less scary. This is a very mild rollercoaster, as far they go. Not quite a kiddie coaster, but probably only a few steps above that.

Lines and Other Tips: This one varies. It tends to have a long-ish line, but it is definitely not as bad as Space Mountain, wait-time wise. My point is that, if you want to do both and only have time to get one Fastpass, go for SM instead. It is not unusual to see 20-minute waits for Big Thunder, especially earlier in the day. Also, after dark, and especially after the fireworks, Frontierland almost always tends to clear out dramatically. So if you plan on staying that long, a night ride on this one is a pretty safe bet (provided you are not there on a peak day).

This is one of my favorite rides at Magic Kingdom. Unfortch, it is down for renovation until May 27, 2012, so if you are going before that, it won't be running. I miss it! Haha. If you've been on the ride a hundred times like I have, you will start to notice the silly little details they put in. Like the guy in a bathtub floating in one of the ponds. Oh, Disney. You really are in the details.

xoxo, Lily.
